The Hurun Research Institute today launched the Hurun China Art List 2022, a ranking of the Top 100 Chinese artists alive today based on the sales of their works at public auction in the year ending 31 December 2021. This is the fifteenth year of the Hurun China Art List.

l Cui Ruzhuo topped the Hurun China Art List for the 8th year running, this year with a total turnover of his works at public auction amounting to US$95mn, down 22% on the previous year.
l Zeng Fanzhi, 58, maintaining the 2nd place with US$53mn. Zeng has made the Hurun China Art List for 15 consecutive years, topping it in 2014.
l The cut-off for the Top 50 and the Top 100 has been greatly improved compared with the previous two years. To make the Top 50 required US$2.3mn, up 70% from last year, but still only one-third of the peak in 2012. To make the Top 100 required US$850,000, up six-fold from last year, but still less than the peak in 2015. 11 artists saw sales of their works of art break through the CNY 100mn barrier, up 5 on last year.
l The number of oil painters on the list once again exceeded that of Chinese ink artists. There are 62 oil painters this year, 8 more than last year; 35 Chinese ink artists, 10 less than last year. 5 artists (Huang Jiannan, Zhu Yaokui, Ai Xuan, Liu Guosong and Wang Jieyin) use both traditional Chinese ink and oil painting. In the past ten years, the status of oil painters on the list has risen. In 2013, the number of oil painters and Chinese painters on the list was 32 and 67 respectively.
l 4 sculptors made the list, the same number as last year. Li Zhen, 59, ranked 19th with a turnover of US$6.3mn, up 14 places from last year, and is the only sculptor in the Top 20. Ju Ming, 84, ranked 47th with a turnover of US$2.5mn; Gao Yijin, 58, ranked 64th for the first time with a turnover of US$1.8mn. Only 10 sculptors have been listed on the Hurun China Art List in the past 15 years.
l The number of artists under the age of 50 has risen for the third consecutive years, up 5 this year to 20, and this year is the most in the past ten years. The youngest is 36-year-old female oil painter Mi Qiaoming, who ranked 88th with a turnover of US$1mn. 4 entered the Top 30 of the list: Beijing oil painter Huang Yuxing, 47, ranked 9th with a turnover of US$20.5mn, Liaoning oil painter Jia Aili, 43, ranked 14th with a turnover of US$11.7mn, Fujian oil painter Wang Guangle, 46, ranked 27th with a turnover of US$4.6mn, and Beijing oil painter Ouyang Chun, 48, ranked 29th with a turnover of US$4.4mn.
l The influence of female artists is expanding. Before 2019, only 2013 had more than five female artists on the list. While from 2020 to 2022, there were more than 5 female artists on the list for three consecutive years.
l 5 are over ninety, two more than last year. The eldest is 102-year-old Shandong Chinese ink painter Sun Qifeng, who ranked 57th with a turnover of US$1.9mn. Sun Qifeng has been on the list for 11 years. The other four are: 90-year-old Zhu Yaokui, 98-year-old Hunan Chinese painter Huang Yongyu, 90-year-old Anhui Chinese painting and oil painting Liu Guosong and 91-year-old Jiangsu Chinese painter Shen Peng.
l The average age is 64 years old, 1 year younger than last year, the third year in a row that the average age has declined.
l Beijing has consistently been the city where the most artists on the list were born and reside. This year, the list of artists currently living in Beijing is still ahead of other cities with 54, although 3 less than last year; Sichuan has 3 more than last year to 6, ranked 2nd; Jiangsu has 2 fewer than last year to 5, ranked 3rd; The number of people in Shanghai remains unchanged, still 5 people, tied for third with Jiangsu; The USA added 2 to 4, ranking 5th.
l In terms of birthplace, 12 were born in Beijing, 1 less than last year; Shanghai rose to second place, with 8; Sichuan increased by 3 to tie it with Shanghai in second place; Jiangsu decreased by 5 compared with last year to 7, tied for fourth with Shandong and Chongqing.
l Artists Who Have Been on the List for the 10 Consecutive Years: 27 artists have been on the list in the past ten years. They are: Cui Ruzhuo, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhou Chunya, Zhang Xiaogang, Liu Ye, Fan Zeng, Liu Wei, Luo Zhongli, Shang Yang, Huang Yongyu, Fang Lijun, Shi Guoliang, He Jiaying, Jin Shangyi, Ai Xuan, Zhu Ming, Wang Mingming, Ren Zhong, Fang Chuxiong, Jia Youfu, Xu Bing, Tian Liming, Wang Yidong, Lin Yong, Xu Lele, Shen Peng and Fan Yang.
l Zhang Daqian, who died in 1983, led the list of the Hurun Best-Selling Chinese Artists, with sales of US$299mn, up 25%, followed by Zhao Wuji, who died in 2013, with sales of 172mn. Four others commanded sales of over US$100mn, including Qi Baishi, who died in 1957, Wu Guanzhong, who died in 2010, Fu BAoshi, who died in 1965 and Chang Yu, who died in 1966.
(9 June 2022, Shanghai) The Hurun Research Institute today launched the Hurun China Art List 2022, a ranking of the Top 100 Chinese artists alive today based on the sales of their works at public auction in the year ending 31 December 2021. This is the fifteenth year of the Hurun China Art List. The report includes the Hurun Best-Selling Chinese Artists 2022, a list of the 100 best-selling artists from China. The lists were compiled from data collected by Artprice, Artron and Artpro.
In 2021, China's art auction turnover was up 43% to US$5.9bn, surpassing the US$5.7bn in the USA, according to Art Market Monitor of Artron.
The total turnover of the 100 artists on the Hurun China Art List 2022 was US$666mn, an increase of 32% over last year. The threshold for the list has risen to US$850,000, six times that of last year. The turnover of 11 artists exceeded CNY 100mn, 5 more than last year. A total of 287 artists have made the Hurun China Art List these 15 years.

The Top 10
3 new faces this year in the Top 10, of which Huang Jiannan, 70, and Chen Danqing, 69, returned to the Top 10 with an increase of 459% and 310%. The Top 10 artists saw an average increase of 103% in sales. The average age is 69 years old, 5 years older than the average age of the total list, and 4 years older than the average age of the Top 10 last year. There are 8 oil painters in the Top 10, which is the same as last year. 9 live in Beijing and 1 in Sichuan.
Cui Ruzhuo topped the Hurun China Art List once again with a total turnover of US$95mn. He has topped the list for eight consecutive years. Cui Ruzhuo's total turnover in 2021 decreased 22% from the previous year, but it was still nearly 80% higher than the second place turnover.
Zeng Fanzhi, 58, maintaining the 2nd with US$53mn. Zeng Fanzhi has been listed on the Hurun China Art List for 15 consecutive years, and topped the list in 2014.
The 67-year-old oil painter Zhou Chunya's turnover increased by 8% to US$43mn, maintaining the 3rd place. Zhou Chunya has been listed on the Hurun China Art List for the 15th consecutive year , and has remained in the Top 5 for five consecutive years.
The 64-year-old oil painter Zhang Xiaogang's turnover increased by 10% to US$33mn ranked 4th. Zhang Xiaogang has been listed in the Hurun China Art List for fifteen consecutive years, and has remained in the Top 10 for six consecutive years.
The turnover of 69-year-old oil painter Chen Danqing increased by 310% to US$30mn, rising 7 places to 5th. This year is the highest ranking Chen Danqing has achieved since he first entered the Hurun China Art List in 2008, and it is also the first time that Chen Danqing has entered the Top 10.
Liu Ye, 58, ranked 6th with US$29mn. Liu Ye has been included in the Hurun China Art List for 15 consecutive years.
Huang Jiannan, 70, ranked 7 with US$28.8mn. Since Huang was first listed on the Hurun China Art List in 2014, he has been on the list for nine consecutive years, seven of which have been in the Top 10.
Zhu Yaokui, 90, ranked 8th with US$23.4mn. His 2009 work, 'The Source of the Yellow River,' was sold last year by Rong Bao Zhai (Nanjing) for US$9.8mn. This year marks the fourth consecutive year that Zhu has entered the Hurun China Art List. This year is the fourth consecutive year that Zhu entered the Hurun China Art List .
The 47-year-old oil painter Huang Yuxing's turnover increased by 207%, ranked 9th with US$20.5mn, up five places from last year. A 2019 painting of his was sold at Christie's last year for US$8.2mn. Huang is the youngest artist in the Top 10. This year is the fourth time he has entered the Hurun China Art List and the first time he entered the Top 10.
Chinese ink painter Fan Zeng, 84, ranked 10th withvUS$18.8mn, down four places from last year. Fan has been listed on Hurun China Art List for 15 years in a row, and topped the list in 2011 and 2012.
Top 10 most expensive works by living artists
Among the Top 10 most expensive works by living artists, 7 are oil paintings and 3 are Chinese ink. Among them,3 Chinese ink were works of Cui Ruzhuo; The 7 oil paintings were by Chen Danqing, Zhang Xiaogang, Liu Ye, Leng Jun, Wang Huaiqing, Zhu Yaokui and Huang Yuxing.
50 artists have been listed on the Hurun China Art List 8 or more times. Among them, 27 artists have been on the list in the past ten years.
