(28 March 2024, Shanghai) Hurun Education, the education platform of Hurun Inc., today released the Hurun Education Top International Schools in China 2023, a ranking of the best-regarded international schools in China. The ranking included the Hurun Education International Schools in China Top 100 and the Hurun Education International Schools Open to Non-Chinese Passport Holders Only Top 30. This is the sixth year of the ranking.

The number of Chinese studying abroad is close to 1 million students, with over 300,000 in the USA, 200,000 in the UK, 150,000 in Australia, 100,000 in Canada, and more than 100,000 in Southeast Asia, mostly Singapore. Nearly two-thirds of them are in graduate or doctoral programs, 30% are in undergraduate programs, and 5% are at highschools.

As of August 2023, the total number of accredited international schools in the Chinese mainland were 970, of which 148 were open to non-Chinese passport holders only and 567 were private schools.

The results were based on a survey of 560 international education experts, asking them one questions: “Which schools, in your opinion, provided a good all-round education and prepare students well to study at university overseas”. Respondents were invited to nominate up to five schools in each of East China, North China, South China and western China.

The schools listed in the Hurun Education International Schools in China Top 100 come from 23 cities in China. These schools were set up 14 years ago on average and today have an average of 1,100 students per school.

The schools listed in the Hurun Education International Schools Open to Non-Chinese Passport Holders Only Top 30 came from 13 cities. Set up 22 years ago on average, the total number of students were 46,000, with an average of 1,100 per school.

Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report, said,

“The Hurun Education Top Internationals Schools in China are voted for by their peers. Hurun Education surveyed 560 China international education experts, 70% from international schools. The participation rate of schools that have been on the list in previous years is more than 60%. A total of 501 schools were nominated, with 151 making the final cut, divided into Hurun Education International Schools in China Top 100 and Hurun Education International Schools Open to Non-Chinese Passport Holders Only Top 30 .”

“20,000 Chinese students apply to high school overseas each year, and over 100,000 for the first year of undergraduate overseas. The schools on Hurun Education list account for about one tenth of all Chinese students studying abroad with the rest split across other schools in China.”

“The Hurun Education Schools List is targeted at parents, who are looking to choose a suitable school for their child, at teachers, who are thinking of applying to a better school, and at university admissions officers, who are looking to understand the lay of the land for schools in China.”

“Despite the many challenges faced by international schools in China, both in terms of a changing regulatory environment and a shortage in foreign teachers, these schools have come a long way in a very short time. Set up only 16 years ago on average, China now has the highest number of high schools in the world on the Hurun Global Highschools List after the USA and the UK.”

“In terms of cities, Shanghai tops the list with more than 40 international schools, followed by Beijing with more than 30, and then Guangzhou, Suzhou and Shenzhen. Where these international schools are located can help us understand which cities in China are doing well in terms of internationalization.”

“There are said to be some 1 million foreign passport holders living in China today, of which K12 students number just under 100,000."
