HURUN REPORT, WORLD’S LARGEST RICH LIST PROVIDER, RELEASES HURUN GLOBAL 40 & UNDER SELF-MADE BILLIONAIRES 2020
(9 March 2020, Shanghai, China, Oxford, UK and Mumbai, India) Hurun Research today released the Hurun Global 40 & Under Self-Made Billionaires 2020, a ranking of the self-made US dollar billionaires aged forty years and under in the world. Wealth calculations are a snapshot of 31 January 2020. This is the fifth year of the ranking, and follows on from the Hurun Global Rich List released on 26 February.
Hurun Research found 53 self-made individuals from 9 countries with US$1bn or more of wealth. Their average age was 37, and average wealth US$5.2bn. “Given that there are 200 countries in the world today, it is surprising that the world’s most successful entrepreneurs under the age of 40 are from only 9 countries,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun Report.
38 saw their wealth increase, of which 18 were new faces. 8 saw their wealth decrease and 7 saw their wealth stay the same. There were 10 drop-offs, of which 7 were because they are now above 40yrs and 3 because they did not make the cut. “China added 8 new faces, almost three times that of America. India added four, also ahead of the USA,” said Hoogewerf. “It took them six years to get to their first billion on average.”
“The Hurun Global 40 & Under Self-Made Billionaires 2020 represents the hottest rising stars in business in the world, people who have achieved the remarkable milestone of billionaire status before the age of 40,” said Hoogewerf.
Only 2 of the 53 are women. “The world’s most successful young entrepreneurs are overwhelmingly male,” said Hoogewerf. “The exceptions are the likes of Kylie Jenner of Kylie Cosmetics and Lilian Wu Yan of Hakim.”
The Top 10
There were four new faces in the Top 10. The cut-off was US$4.7bn, down from US$6.5bn last year.

Mark Zuckerberg, 35, of Facebook saw his wealth rise US$4bn to US$84bn, making him still the undisputed champion of the Under 40s. and Number 5 on the recently launched Hurun Global Rich List. Zuckerberg sold US$500mn worth of shares in the past year. Facebook today has over 2.5 billion users.
Colin Huang Zheng of ecommerce giant Pinduoduo, saw his wealth up 20% to US$18bn, cementing him into second place. During the Chinese outbreak of coronavirus, Pinduoduo mobilized medical resources at home and abroad, and assisted Hubei with multiple batches of medical supplies.
TikTok founder Zhang Yiming, 37, was third with US$13.8bn. ByteDance, the parent behind TikTok and Chinese news aggregator Toutiao, is the second most valuable unicorn in the world, valued at US$75bn, behind Jack Ma’s Ant Financial, according to the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2019. Unusually for a Chinese start-up, ByteDance has been hugely successful across the world, as well as in its domestic market. TikTok, for example, has emerged to rival companies like Netflix, YouTube, Snapchat, and Facebook with more than one billion downloads. In June last year, ByteDance invested just under US$200 million for 30% of online sports content platform Hupu. During the coronavirus outbreak in China, ByteDance has seen a surge in demand for its products, and invested US$90mn for the online launch of the movie Lost in Russia.
Dustin Moskovitz, 35, co-founder of Facebook, dropped down two places to fourth with US$13.4bn. Last year digital management platform Asana, that Moskovitz launched back in 2008, was valued at US$2bn according to the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2019.
Singapore-based Eduardo Saverin, 37, co-founder of Facebook, saw his wealth increase 24% to US$12.2bn. Saverin is today active with B Capital, a VC firm, which has backed more than 20 start-ups globally. In 2011 São Paulo-born Saverin renounced his American citizenship and is one of eight on the list who have emigrated from their country of origin.
Tom Zhang Bangxin, 39, of TAL doubled his wealth to US$10.4bn, shooting him into the Top 10, and making him the world’s most successful education entrepreneur. With schools shut in China during the coronavirus outbreak, there has been a surge in online education. Net income in the first three quarters of last year increased by 36% year-on-year to US$2.5bn.
Sydney-based Mike Cannon-Brookes & Scott Farquhar, 40, of software firm Atlassian, each saw their wealth jump by 43% on the back of a surge in the company share price, making them the most successful Australian tech entrepreneurs. The university friends started Atlassian with funding from credit cards.
Shenzhen-based Frank Wang Tao, 40, of drone making giant DJI was 9th with US$6.8bn.
Airbnb cofounders Nathan Blecharczyk, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia broke into the Top 10 with US$4.7bn each.
Other points of interest
Coronavirus. Most of the Chinese young entrepreneurs have made donations to the country’s coronavirus effort, led by Zhang Yiming’s ByteDance, which donated US$55mn, of which Zhang personally donated US$15mn to China’s Red Cross. Others included Huang Zheng’s Pinduoduo, Zhang Bangxin’s TAL, Frank Wang Tao’s DJI and Su Hua’s Kuaishou, which each donated US$15mn.
Kylie Jenner, 22, is one of only two women to make the list. Jenner has far and away the largest social media following with 150mn Instagram followers, which was good news for Mark Zuckerberg, who in 2012 bought Instagram from Kevin Systrom. Systrom flew to the Vatican to create an account for Pope Francis.
Shared economy. The shared economy, which has traditionally derived its valuations from growth instead of profits, have seen their valuations under pressure recently. For instance, Ryan Graves, 36, the first employee of Uber in 2010, who became CEO until last year, saw his wealth down 20% to US$1.3bn. The co-working space, WeWork had to roll back its IPO plans after it saw its valuation drop from US$45bn to less than US$8bn, resulting in Adam Neumann, 40, seeing his wealth plummet 80% to US$1.3bn, and leave the company. Coronavirus fears is also impacting Airbnb’s IPO plans.
E-commerce. Phoenix-based Ernest Garcia III, 37, of used-car platform Carvana, is a new entrant this year with US$1.5bn, despite Carvana registering a loss of US$360 million last year. Backed by a 25% increase in share price of Shopify, German-born Canadian Tobias Lutke, 39, saw his wealth increase to US$4.1bn. With US$2.9bn, Su Hua, 38, of Beijing-based e-commerce giant Kuaishou saw his wealth increase by 32%, as Kuaishou has built up an 8% stake of live-streaming e-commerce market in China closely following TikTok and distantly following Alibaba’s Taobao Live.
Online Games. China-born Singapore-based Ye Gang of Sea has Tencent as an investor, which has around 20% stake. Markus Persson, 40, sold Minecraft for US$2.5bn to Microsoft in 2014.
Entertainment. Stockholm-based Daniel Ek, 36, of Spotify saw his wealth rise 4% to US$2.4bn, on the back of Spotify increasing its monthly active users to just under 300 million.
Dropbox. With US$1.8bn, Drew Houston, 36, announced a US$600 million buyback plan, which equals about 7% of its market cap, to underscore management's confidence in its future.
Beijing-based Mu Rongjun, 40, of Meituan-Dianping broke into the list, on the back of Meituan’s share price doubling in the last year.
India had 4 new faces this year, led by Binny Bansal, 37, and Sachin Bansal, 38, of Flipkart. Since exiting to Walmart in 2018, Binny has set himself the target of supporting 10,000 start-ups through his platform xto10x, while Sachin is into fintech, through Navi Technologies. Nithin Kamath, 40, set up stock brokerage Zerodha in 2010 together with his brother Nikhil, 34, and last year they officially became India’s largest brokerage firm, both by the number of active clients and trading turnover on the exchanges. Now they are focused on taking on the hedge fund industry, by charging no management fees. Ritesh Agarwal, 26, of Oravel Stays was the fourth.
Where they live.
By country, China closed the gap with the USA, adding 3, whilst the USA dropped one. USA topped the list for the fifth year running. India added three to rise to third place.
By city, Beijing added 2 to take it on a par with San Francisco with 11 billionaires. Bengaluru of India rose to third place.

There were 10 drop-offs from the list last year, of which 7 were because they are now above 40yrs and three, who are below 40, but did not make the cut.
These three included Wu Jihan, 34, of bitcoin miner Bitmain, which saw its value drop after a dispute amongst the co-founders; Evan Sharp, 38, of Pinterest, whose stock price was down; and Chicago-based Rishi Shah, 34, of Outcome Health, who became embroiled in a lawsuit with the SEC, which claimed that Shah committed securities fraud when raising US$500 million in financing.
