It is interesting to note that over the past five years, (effectively since the start of the pandemic), large donations from India’s top businessmen and women have exponentially increased. For example, the number of individuals donating over ₹100 crore has surged from two to fourteen, and those that have contributed more than ₹50 crore have increased from five to twenty-four: a remarkable 380% increase. From the 2023 fiscal year, the top ten donors alone contributed approximately ₹5.806 crore, up 91% from the previous fiscal year.
Mr K. Dinesh, co-founder of Infosys and Managing Trustee of the Ashraya Hastha Trust
In total, 119 philanthropists made it onto the list, donating all together a staggering ₹8.445 crore, a significant 59% increase from 2022. Therefore, with this current trend, we can expect to see a grand total of at least approximately ₹13.512 crore in donations in the 2024 fiscal year.
21% of the 2024 list is composed of new entrants; the majority of those being younger and are the future of philanthropy in India. Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, at just 37 years old, became the youngest philanthropist on the list with a cumulative donation of ₹110 crore.
This year’s event underscored a wider shift towards more strategic and therefore impactful philanthropy, thus moving away from the traditional acts of charity normally associated with addressing broader societal changes. The diverse list of men and women from all over India also includes professionals from the pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical industries, emphasising the expansive support for India’s socioeconomic development.
